Update on the status of the SEMMMS New Relief Road

June 2007

The Department for Transport has responded to Stockport, Manchester and Cheshire’s bid for funding for the South East Manchester Relief Road scheme. The Department has acknowledged that the relief road would deliver significant benefits in relieving congestion in South East Manchester and improving access to Manchester Airport.

The Department has also confirmed that they recognise the level of local support for building this road but are seeking to address the affordability of the scheme within available budgets by continuing to look at various options of funding the construction of this 25km road upgrade.

Over the next few month officials from the SEMMMS authorities will be meeting with representatives from the Department for Transport to consider the various options that are available to pay for the relief road. The Department for Transport will be considering again all available funding options in early autumn.

Although Stockport Council has expressed its disappointment and frustration over yet another delay they are committed to making the relief road a reality. In the meantime if you would like further information about the response from Stockport Council please visit www.stockport.gov.uk.

Welcome

On this page you can view the results of the Stage 1 public consultation process. You can access information on this site detailing how you the public responded to the first stage of consultations, and also learn more detailed information about the scheme, especially some of the options that are now being considered.

The Feedback page is a summary of the analysis of what was said during the first stage of consultation, including what people thought of the scheme in principle and the route being proposed. There is also a list of some of the other comments that were received, including some ideas and suggestions that people made. All the comments we have received are being given careful attention and will be considered during the development of the scheme.

The maps page features a more detailed map of the whole scheme, giving a better idea of the route the new road may take. Alternative layouts are possible at a number of the junctions where the new road will join with the existing road network, and we asked people during the Stage 2 consultation to offer their views on any route options that may have affected them. The results of the Stage 2 consultation can be seen by clicking on the Stage 3 link.

Once again we would like your help and to know your views, so please feel free to leave any comments you have on the have you say page.
