Update on the status of the SEMMMS New Relief Road

June 2008

In June 2007 the Department for Transport responded to Stockport, Manchester and Cheshire’s bid for funding for the South East Manchester Relief Road scheme. The Department has acknowledged that the relief road would deliver significant benefits in relieving congestion in South East Manchester and improving access to Manchester Airport.

The Department has also confirmed that they recognise the level of local support for building this road but are seeking to address the affordability of the scheme within available budgets by continuing to look at various options of funding the construction of this 25km road upgrade.

Since this time the SEMMMS authorities have been meeting with representatives from the Department for Transport to consider the various options that are available to pay for the relief road. The Department for Transport is currently considering again all the funding options. The most likely preference appears to be the delivery of the road in phases.

Although Stockport Council has expressed its frustration over the continuing delay they are committed to making the relief road a reality. In the meantime if you would like further information about the response from Stockport Council please visit www.stockport.gov.uk.
