Bats are useful animals capable of eating hundreds of insects per hour. Unfortunately, bats tend to sleep in attics and can cause damage to insulation and wood over time. There are many different ways to get your bats out of your attic. Here’s a few.
Time of Bat Removal – The Dos and the Donts
The timing of your bat exclusion is critical. Bats breed in spring, typically in May. Bat exclusion must take place between August and May, as the baby bats cannot fly during most summer months. Apart from the fact that they are affected by inhuman treatment, baby bats, which are left behind by a temporary exclusion, will cause other problems. Early spring or early autumn are the best times for a bat exclusion.
You need a few people to help you observe your roofline at dusk to note the bats’ exit points. Observe a few days and note down all places where bats fly out of the house.
Find an Alternative Bat Home
Bats have a good sense of position and will return to their nest out of instinct. A bat house can hold a hundred or more bats and is easy to make. Bat houses are also sold commercially and usually cost between $15 and $50; the higher your mountain is a bat house, the more likely the bats will use it. Hang your bat house close to one of your preferred entry points to your attic and you will increase your chances of moving into a new apartment there.
Depending on the type of bat exit routes, you can use bat cones or hardware fabric screens to exit and block access. A bat cone is a small, narrow tube that drops sharply downwards with a slippery inner surface. Bats can fly back, but not through a bat cone. Install bat cones in any hole that can accommodate them. In the case of small cracks, tape the fabric cover over the crack to the top and both sides, leaving the floor unsecured. The bats can wiggle through the opening, but not back in.
Observe your roofline for one week after you have completed the above steps. After making sure that the barriers are effective, remove the bat cones and sieves and close the holes and cracks permanently. Silicone seals are best for sealing small areas, and in some cases you will need to permanently install the screen hardware cloth over vents that require airflow.
Removal of bat odour (reduction of the laws of attraction!)
The smell of guano and urine will attract bats in the following seasons. Waste and odour removal are also important for a healthy indoor environment. Use an odour remover with enzymes for best results and replace damaged insulation.
Most states require a pest control license or permit. Additional permits are only required for the inclusion of listed species if bat populations pose a health risk to humans.
Wild animals taking in injured wild animals require permits. However, some states like Kentucky do not allow rehabilitators to rescue rabies vector species, including rackets. The federal law prohibits the collection of bat bodies of listed species. Find out more information with us, and engage our most demanded service with Central Plains Bat Removal Locations!
